OpenHands: open-source AI software engineering agents

OpenHands, formerly known as OpenDevin, is an open-source platform for AI-driven software development. It is designed for agents that can understand a codebase, edit files, run shell commands, browse documentation, execute tests, and help developers move from issue to pull request.

OpenHands is broader than a single chatbot. The official project now includes a composable Software Agent SDK, a Claude Code-like CLI, a local GUI with REST API and React app, hosted OpenHands Cloud, and enterprise self-hosting options.

How it is different

OpenHands is model-agnostic and open source. Teams can use the CLI locally, run a GUI, integrate cloud workflows, or build custom agents with tools such as terminal execution, file editing, task tracking, GitHub Actions, Slack, Jira, and Linear integrations depending on setup.

Limitations

OpenHands agents can be powerful, but they still need clear task specs, tests, permissions, sandboxing, and human review. For production use, treat it as an engineering automation system: define acceptance checks, protect secrets, and review diffs before merging.
