Spec-kit is a toolkit from GitHub designed to kickstart Spec-Driven Development with AI. Instead of jumping straight into code, it gives developers and AI agents a structured way to draft, refine, and validate software specifications before generating the actual implementation.
Teams working with AI coding tools who want to ensure the AI actually builds what was agreed upon instead of wandering off into the weeds.
I am completely sold on the idea, even if the execution is still finding its footing. The reality is that asking an LLM to "build me an app" usually results in unmaintainable spaghetti code. Spec-Driven Development is probably the only way forward if we want agents to build actual complex systems. GitHub putting out an official toolkit for this is a huge signal. A lot of junior devs are probably going to hate it because it requires actually thinking about architecture before typing, but for senior devs managing AI like a team of interns, it's exactly what we needed.
